Eagle Rare 12 Year: A New Era of Eagle Rare

Eagle Rare 12 debuts in June 2025 with a suggested retail price of $49.99, making it surprisingly affordable for a 12-year expression. Whether it actually stays on shelves at that price remains to be seen—but at least Buffalo Trace intends for it to be both available and accessible.

This release comes on the heels of Buffalo Trace’s massive $1.2 billion expansion, which boosted its production capacity significantly. That extra space (and time) in the barrel warehouse has allowed the distillery to take aging a little further without venturing into the realm of ultra-limited collector’s bottles.

“This isn’t just more time in the barrel,” said Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley. “It reflects years of experimentation and refinement.”

A Look at the Stats

Here’s what we know so far about the new bottle:

  • Age: 12 years
  • Proof: 95 (47.5% ABV)
  • Mash Bill: Buffalo Trace’s Mashbill #1 (generally considered a low-rye bourbon)
  • Price: $49.99 MSRP
  • Availability: Permanent addition to the lineup, starting in the U.S. (international releases expected later in 2025)

What’s It Taste Like?

Buffalo Trace describes the Eagle Rare 12’s profile as having a “sweet, oaky aroma with hints of almond,” followed by vanilla, toasted oak, and toffee on the palate. That additional time in the barrel gives it a bit more depth and character without losing the approachability that defines the Eagle Rare brand.

Where It Fits in the Family

Eagle Rare 12 now joins a full spectrum of age-stated bottles in the Eagle Rare line:

  • Eagle Rare 10: A fan favorite, known for its elegance and drinkability
  • Eagle Rare 12: The new middle ground—stronger and older, but still priced for regular enjoyment
  • Eagle Rare 17: Part of the annual Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, aged well beyond the label
  • Double Eagle Very Rare (20-Year): Limited and highly collectible
  • Eagle Rare 25: The rarest of them all, aged in Buffalo Trace’s experimental climate-controlled Warehouse P

The Backstory: A Legacy That’s Still Evolving

Eagle Rare began its journey in the 1970s under the guidance of Charles Beam at Seagram’s. The brand changed hands in 1989 when Sazerac acquired it—back when Sazerac didn’t even have a distillery of its own. The bourbon was briefly produced at Heaven Hill before settling into its forever home at Buffalo Trace in the early 1990s.

Since then, the Eagle Rare name has grown into a symbol of balance, age, and craftsmanship—something Buffalo Trace is clearly betting on again with this new 12-year expression.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re a seasoned bourbon collector or just someone looking for a smoother pour at a reasonable price, Eagle Rare 12 looks like it could be your next go-to bottle. While time will tell how easy it is to find at MSRP, its official placement as a permanent release gives us reason to hope it’ll be more than just a one-time unicorn.
