Daniel Weller Spelt Wheat is available at the Distillery today, giving visitors a rare opportunity to purchase one of Buffalo Trace’s newest and most experimental releases.
The second release in the Daniel Weller series, Spelt Wheat continues the Distillery’s mission of exploring how different ancient wheat varietals influence the flavor of wheated bourbon. Instead of changing barrel treatments or aging methods, Buffalo Trace focused on a single variable—the grain itself.
The result is a 10-year-old wheated bourbon bottled at 94 proof that replaces traditional wheat with ancient spelt wheat, a grain known for adding subtle sweetness, nuttiness, and baking spice characteristics. According to Buffalo Trace Master Distiller Harlen Wheatley, the goal was to let the grain’s unique personality shine without additional production variables. (The Whiskey Wash)
Daniel Weller is one of Buffalo Trace’s most premium experimental brands and carries a suggested retail price of $549.99. Since its initial release earlier this year, bottles have been distributed only in limited quantities to select retailers, bars, restaurants, and the Distillery itself. (The Whiskey Wash)
